We all sat around, cried (of course) and felt so encouraged by so many of our loved ones. It’s just what we needed to finish our trek to San Diego.
Though we are riding miles and miles each day, the purpose of our ride is not in the cycling. We are riding to start conversations. People are more likely to tell others about our mission if they have a meaningful encounter, and acts of generosity inspire us to keep extending ourselves to others—even on the long days!
Today was one of the first days that I really missed my home. I thought about how if I were there I’d probably be down at the bay, with the sunshine on my skin, eating watermelon in a 102° heat index. I thought about how I could spend my night laying on the Grand Hotel lawn looking up at millions of dollars worth of extravagant lights.
We biked up to the house and were immediately greeted with warm hugs and told to get into MJ’s private swimming hole- the most beautiful, clear, cold water that soothed our sore legs. We swam, laid on the warm sand, and hung out around the house until John showed up with chicken, burgers, and sausage to grill out for dinner.
It was right there in front of our faces - the very reason we’re getting up and back on those cursed bicycles every morning. Right there in broad daylight, a brothel on a busy American city street. Something that a few months ago, I probably would’ve been blind to. Something happening right under our noses, a lot closer to home than we’d like to imagine.
It felt like bad things were happening over and over again. I felt helpless in my limited knowledge about bikes and also sad because I thought I would miss the coffee (good news, I didn’t.) By the time we got to our interview spot, I was not in the mood to be chatty and pose for pictures but that is the whole dang point of this ride. It doesn’t matter that we were rained on all night or that everything was going wrong with our bikes. If we are too caught up in the cycling and the discomfort we’re in, we are unable to have important conversations with people we meet about The Refuge.
